Alex Bergers Design Document
Purpose:
The purpose of this site will be to assist with the development of the science fair for middle school students. This site will have multiple uses to students. One of the uses will be to assist with picking a project that is correct for the student and is age appropriate. The second major use of the site will be to help navigate the major parts of the science fair. Students and parents will be able to read examples and look at pictures of what the experiment should look like.
Audience:
This website will be targeted at school aged students and their parents. Many students become very overwhelmed with the thought of having to complete a science fair project. This site will be a support to the students who feel that they are no doing the work correctly or in the wrong order. This site will also be targeted at parents, because like their children they also feel overwhelmed when it comes to the science fair. Many parents do not know how to help their children with their projects and this site will give example of what the final project will need to look like.
Needs Assessment:
I reviewed question I received last year from students and pulled the ones that I thought would be most helpful for my current and future students. My former students wanted to see examples of how the steps wood look during the process. What should they write and how long does it need to be.
Questions asked to the kids I interviewed:
What infomation would like to see on the website
- Picture examples of past projects.
- Examples of 8th grade level expierments.
Why will you be visiting this site?
- All agreed that they would use the site as a reference page.
How will this website help you?
- To check my work.
- To find a place to start my project
Questions asked to parents of middle schoolers.
What do you feel as a parent would be most important on this site?
- A place where parents can find what a full science fair project should look like.
Five reference websites
These are examples of sites I will use as a reference for my design
- For good picture that contain links I like how Science Buddies offeres a big selection of topics.
- For a good color scheme I like chemistry the website. It offeres a few colors that do not take away from the page.
- A site I do not want to model after for layout would be google sciencefair. This site has a distracting banner that follows the user as you scroll down the page.
- For a very interactive site I would model after science fair citing. This site was easy to navagate and read.
- A good example of a layout would be all science fair projects allows the user to find a picture and see related links that are well spaced out on the page.
Content:
Based on the responces, I have chosen to include the following in my site.
- Steps of the science fair: This will be an area to review what needs to go into a science fair project.
- How to pick the right project: He you will find example of 8th grade level science projects/questions.
- Examples of a science fair project: I will have old science fair projects in this area for reference.
- How to cite content in your project: I will have a link to sites that can assist with citing sources.
Presentation of Infomation/Rationale of Organization:
The website will be arranged with topics that have always needed the most assistance first.
- To make all of the pages connect as if one I will
- Use the same color scheme
- Ues the same banner at the top of each page
- Use the same contact infomation at the bottom of each page
- The Main page
- It will use a table format
- Will have links to the other pages
- All other pages
- Each page will be around two screen lengths long.
- I will have only infomation that is relevent to the page they click on
The following detail are the content of each of the pages
